Chapter 8

After Grant stopped by the Sugar Shop early Friday morning and loaded all the orders, Sugar made a quick stop at the mercantile to pick up a space heater and a power strip. She was tired of freezing and not having enough outlets to plug in her electronics.

Once at the school, she chose some of the artwork she had discovered on her tour and began positioning it around the auditorium to showcase the shiniest examples of what they offered.

Her phone chimed a few minutes before eight o’clock, reminding her to get to City Hall. It only took a few minutes to make the drive. She remembered where Mr. London’s office was from the tour Grant gave her.

He was standing in the doorway when she arrived. “Mr. London, I was hoping you had a few minutes this morning.”

“Come right in, Sugar.” She took the cup of coffee he offered, hoping to warm her hands. She went through her plans with him, let him view the mockup of the calendar, showed him the flyers she wanted to post around Silver Falls, and solicited his help with the logistics for the gala.

She finished her presentation and sat back in her chair. He focused on the sketches and flyers on his desk for several minutes. “This is remarkable. I can’t believe you’ve secured all these donations so quickly. It’s wonderful news.” He took another look at the designs. “I’ll get these copied right away. I’ll call Ryan, he’s our point person for handling all the logistics, and you can work directly with him to get everything set up like you want it.” He took the flyers and made his way to the door.

He turned around and smiled at Sugar. “The mayor is going to be thrilled. I’ll be right back.” He hurried down the hall, giving instructions to one of the secretaries.

Sugar used the time to check the tracking information on the supplies for the gala. They were due to arrive before noon and would be delivered directly to the school. She scrolled through her work emails and corresponded with her assistant.

A few minutes later, Mr. London returned with a young dark-haired man with a crooked smile he introduced as Ryan. “Ryan and his team will be at your disposal. We ran into the mayor in the hall and gave him a quick update. He’s delighted and said he’ll be at the gala.”

Ryan handed her a business card. “My cell phone number is on the back. I’ve got it with me all the time, so call if you need anything.”

Sugar slipped the card in her purse. “I’m heading back to the school now. The decorations are arriving this morning. Are you able to stop by so we can go over things?”

They made plans for Ryan to visit the school after lunch. A secretary came through the door and set a tall stack of flyers on the table. Mr. London patted the stack and said, “We’ve got some interns who can help distribute these throughout Silver Falls.
